For CDL-A Truck Drivers ·
What you'll accomplish
By the end of this guide, you'll have a system for getting plain-English answers to DOT compliance questions — HOS rules, CDL medical card requirements, inspection violations, drug testing, and more — without wading through confusing FMCSA manuals or expensive attorney calls. You'll get answers in seconds, on your phone, while you're parked.
What you'll need
The first time you use Claude for compliance questions, give it your background so answers are tailored to your specific situation:
I'm a CDL-A long-haul truck driver operating as an owner-operator. I have my own MC number. I run a 53' dry van. When I ask you compliance questions, give me practical answers that apply to my situation. Always tell me if I should verify with an attorney or the FMCSA directly for high-stakes situations.
Just describe your situation the way you'd tell a friend. Claude handles the regulatory lookup and translates it to plain language.
Good question formats:
Claude will give you a direct answer plus context. Always read the caveat — Claude will tell you when something is complex enough to warrant a real attorney or FMCSA call.
What you should see: A 3-5 paragraph plain English explanation with the key bottom line first, then details, then what to do next.
Troubleshooting: If the answer seems off, ask Claude to cite the specific FMCSA regulation (e.g., 49 CFR Part 395 for HOS) so you can verify independently.
This works best in the moment — parked at a rest area with 20 minutes and a compliance question. Open Claude on your phone, ask the question, get your answer. Keep using the same conversation so Claude remembers your background.
HOS check: "I've driven [X hours], my 14-hour clock started at [time], I took a [length] break at [time]. I need to drive [miles] more. Am I legal?"
Violation lookup: "I got pulled into a weigh station and received a violation for [code/description]. What does this mean for my safety score and what do I need to do?"
Medical card: "My DOT medical card expires in [timeframe]. I take [medication] for [condition]. What do I need to do to renew it and will this medication affect my qualification?"
Drug testing: "I'm starting my own authority as an owner-operator. What are my drug testing program requirements under FMCSA rules?"
Inspection prep: "What are the most common violations at roadside inspections that get trucks put out of service? I want to do my pre-trip more carefully."
