What you'll accomplish
By the end of this guide, you'll know how to use Claude as your first call when a warning light comes on or something sounds wrong — to get a quick diagnosis, understand the severity, research a reasonable repair cost, and walk into a shop without feeling like you'll get taken advantage of.
What you'll need
The more specific you are, the better Claude's answer. Know:
Fault codes are the most useful. They look like: SPN 3364/FMI 18, P20EE, or DEF Fault Code 3251. Write it down exactly.
Open Claude and start a conversation. Type your problem as you'd describe it to a mechanic:
My [year] [make] with a [engine] engine just [describe what happened]. The fault code showing is [code]. I'm currently [location — e.g., "on I-40 near Memphis TN"]. What is this likely problem, how serious is it, and can I safely drive to the nearest [dealer/shop] which is about 65 miles away?
Claude will give you a severity level:
Take the "Do not drive" assessments seriously — continuing to drive through major warnings can turn a $2,000 repair into a $15,000 engine replacement.
What you should see: A diagnosis with probable cause, severity, and what happens if you ignore it.
After getting the diagnosis, ask:
What's a typical repair cost range for this problem at a Cummins/Peterbilt/Kenworth dealer vs. an independent shop? Are there any parts I should know about (like specific part numbers) so I can verify the shop isn't upselling me?
What you should see: A cost range (e.g., "$800-1,400 at a dealer, $500-900 at an independent shop") and what the repair entails so you know what questions to ask.
Ask Claude: "What should I look for in a good independent diesel shop vs. a dealership for this type of repair? Are there certifications or specialties I should ask about?"
Warning light: "My [year/make/engine] just showed [warning light description or code]. What does this mean and is it safe to drive?"
Strange noise: "My truck is making a [grinding/squealing/knocking] sound from the [location] when I [brake/accelerate/turn]. What could this be?"
Before the shop: "I'm taking my truck in for [problem]. What should I ask the mechanic? What's a fair price range and how do I know if they're upselling me?"
After the shop: "The shop wants to charge me $[amount] to fix [problem description] on my [truck]. Does this seem reasonable?"
Maintenance schedule: "What's the recommended maintenance schedule for a [year/make/engine]? I'm at [mileage] — what should I be doing?"
